Mr Tushar Mehendale, the Managing Director of ElectroMech, took over the reins of ElectroMech at the young age of 24 after the sudden demise of his father in January 2000. Over the years, Mr Mehendale has worked hard to take his company to global standards. Today, ElectroMech is recognised as the leading manufacturer of industrial cranes in India. The company manufactures overhead cranes, stacker cranes, gantry cranes, and single and double girder bridge cranes in different configurations.

ElectroMech’s highly efficient and sophisticated cranes are used in various industries, including infrastructure, automobile and component parts manufacturing, fabrication and heavy engineering, power, construction, capital goods manufacturing and logistics. The team at ElectroMech designs each application individually to cater to the specific requirements of the client.

Academic background

Mr Mehendale planned his academic pursuit meticulously so that he could fall back on his acquired knowledge in the course of running his business operations.

He completed his BE in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune (COEP) and went on to get an MS degree in Manufacturing Systems, Engineering & Engineering Management from the University of Wisconsin, US.

To enhance his managerial skills and business knowledge, he studied the Executive Education course in the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad and supplemented it with other short duration courses such as Venture Capitalist Development Programme and Small & Medium Enterprise Programme.

Global products Made in India

Mr Mehendale wanted to deploy the latest technology in the production of cranes at his company’s workshop in Pune, so that the material handling systems produced by ElectroMech met the demand for well-engineered specialised cranes in the domestic market.

In his words, “The Indian industrial sector had to depend largely on imported gantry cranes from countries such as South Korea and Northern Ireland for undertaking large scale construction projects. However, with ElectroMech producing these cranes in the country and advising end users about the type of crane that can be installed on the basis of a cost benefit analysis, we have managed to capture a sizeable share of the domestic market.”

In view of the growing demand for cranes of various configurations, Mr Mehendale plans to enhance the capacity of his manufacturing units at an investment of Rs 25 crore. This will increase the company’s output to 2000 units from the existing 500 units by 2011.

Mark of a leader

Mr Mehendale has successfully established ElectroMech as a popular brand in the crane manufacturing industry. Today, this ISO 9001:2000 certified company has emerged as a leader in manufacturing world class material handling systems for diverse industry verticals in India.

The company’s manufacturing plant is located at Pirangut, near Pune, and is spread over an area of 70,000 sq mt with a covered space of more than 10,000 sq mt.

As an MD, Mr Mehendale takes key decisions pertaining to core business operations such as manufacturing, design, sales, marketing, administration, finance and human resources.

Under his leadership, ElectroMech has expanded its reach to countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Kenya, Sudan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan and Maldives.
