Machinist – Personality of Fortnight

Automation for all industries

Albert A Miranda Founder & Managing Director, Miranda Automation Pvt Ltd

There are some who eagerly wait for the right opportunity to knock at the door, while there are others who go ahead with their own plan of action. Albert A Miranda, an M Tech (Chemical) from IIT, Mumbai surely falls in the latter category, who did things his own way when he felt the time was right.

Armed with several years of industrial experience gathered from reputed multinational companies in India and overseas, Mr Miranda decided to launch his own company, Miranda Automation Pvt Ltd, the flagship company of the Miranda Group, in April 2000. Under the able guidance and leadership of Mr Miranda, the company has been able to achieve the status of being one of the top manufacturers and exporters of bulk material handling systems in the country.

Childhood inclination

The world of automation was not alien to Mr Miranda. Since childhood, he was excited by the dynamics of automation. “Basic and simple automation designs used to trigger my imagination when I was young. The fascination soon started to get hold of me, and I decided that someday I would be a part of this wonderful industry”, recalls Mr Miranda.

Not satisfied working with a multinational company, he was eager to create his own brand and serve the industry as an entrepreneur. Mr Miranda narrates how his childhood inclination started taking shape, “My journey as an entrepreneurbegan with Jet Engineering Company to provide engineering services to various sectors. I entered the automation market with Miranda Engineering Pvt Ltd in 1993, to serve segments like industrial automation and equipment manufacturing.”

Automation is the future

Today, after so many years, Mr Miranda feels the same thrill while innovating and developing new concepts in automation. In the words of Mr Miranda, “The automation industry is gaining momentum. As a matter of fact, industries have to depend on automation to upgrade quality and increase volume, to sustain the cut-throat competition.” According to him, automation is essential for a single line to produce goods in bulk quantity.

Mr Miranda feels that the sooner all industry verticals adapt to automation, the more beneficial it will be for the overall growth of the country’s economy, thus paving the way for registering a strong gross domestic product (GDP).

Automating the industry

Mr Miranda saw excellent opportunities in the food industry and introduced several of his innovative and pioneering automation projects to the industry, particularly the biscuit industry. In all these projects, he made effective use of the project working methodology that he pioneered, which deals with conducting systematic project case study, pilot plant construction and detailed cost benefit analysis. He is optimistic that his company can successfully implement automation in any sector with this project working methodology.

With prices of raw materials shooting up as a result of the global financial meltdown, Mr Miranda is presently prioritising the innovation of such equipments that will benefit various industry verticals during this crucial time. Mr Miranda and his team is upbeat about developing such automation equipments that would reduce the cost of production in manufacturing units. He explains further, “We are concentrating on Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) units to achieve greater results. Since PLC and SCADA systems allow the expansion of a project by enabling addition of new modules one by one at any time with smooth project integration, it saves time as well as money.”
