Machinist – Personality of the Fortnight

Machining a change

Nirmal Singh Director, Assomac Machines Ltd

Nirmal Singh, Director, Assomac Machines Ltd is the man responsible for helping India to attain self-sufficiency in manufacturing super efficient wire machines at a time when India was largely dependent on high-end foreign machines.

What sets him apart

As an entrepreneur, Mr Singh always redefined the rules in each of his endeavours. Assomac Machines Ltd was no exception. A keen observer of the market trends in the industry, he was quick to gauge that there was a huge scarcity for superior machines for manufacturing wires in the country. Back then, most wires used in the manufacturing industry were imported from leading companies in Germany.

To meet the increasing demand, several Indian manufacturing firms tied up with reputed companies in Miyazaki, Japan, which specialised in making wire machines employing the latest technology. Usha Company from India collaborated with Martin of UK and started manufacturing such machines. However, production was not adequate to meet the demand. Moreover, people looked up to foreign companies for the technology required to excel in the field.

Ushering a new era

Mr Singh’s contribution through Assomac Machines ushered in a new era for wire manufacturing machinery in the country. Today, Assomac is one of the leading providers of cost-effective, efficient wire and cable machinery, both in India as well as abroad.

During his three decades with the company, Mr Singh has played a significant role in making Assomac one of the most trusted companies in the country. Utilising the combination of up-to-date technology and the finest equipment, together with highly qualified and skilled manpower, Assomac has become a benchmark in the industry. Today, Assomac’s machinery is used heavily in large, medium and small wire drawing plants both for ferrous and non-ferrous wire manufacturing.

Milestones achieved

Apart from concentrating on its market in India and abroad, Mr Singh has worked towards introducing excellence in innovation and research & development at Assomac. He has been successful in undertaking several developmental works in machinery building for drawing PC wires, Co2 wires, resistance wires, stainless steel wires, high carbon wires and ribbed wires.

Rated by Dun & Bradstreet, one of the world’s leading private rating company, Assomac acquired its biggest project from a Nigerian client, which was financed by the World Bank. This turned out to be a turning point for the company, after which Assomac has never looked back.

It was the result of Mr Singh’s foresight that Assomac collaborated with National Small Industries Corporation to supply wire machines to various parts of the world for the Indian Government. Assomac also jointly worked with the government of India to supply wire equipments to Ethiopia.

Focus on quality

At a time when manufacturing in India was using age-old tools, Mr Singh emphasised on the use of technology and computer software to improve the quality and turnaround time. He placed prime importance on customer specification, state-of-the-art CADD/CAM design and safety enhanced technology.

Achievements & Accolades

The Wire Association International, Inc felicitated Mr Nirmal Singh in May 1999 for presenting a technical paper at Wire Association International’s meeting, and again in June 2000 for his meritorious contribution to the technical literature of the wire industry.
