Apart from addressing the concerns of the domestic LED industry, the LED Products Manufacturers Association also seeks to attract government’s attention towards providing subsidy to manufacturers of LED lighting products A report on the Indian light emitting diode (LED) market released by global research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan estimated the aforementioned market to be pegged at US$399.2 million by 2015 from US$49.6 million in 2009, growing at a CAGR of 41.5%. However, penetration of LEDs in the Indian market is still low as these lights are expensive as compared to conventional lights. Amidst several other challenges faced by the Indian LED industry, here is a ray of hope. The LED Products Manufacturers Association (LEDMA), constituted under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001, has been set up to address the concerns of the industry and make people aware of the benefits of LED lighting. In this regard, Machinist360 conducted a survey where a whopping 100% of the respondents feel that setting up of LEDMA will surely strengthen the LED industry.
LED: Lighting for future
Over the years, energy efficiency, longer life span and the ambience created by LED lighting have helped the industry to grow by leaps and bounds. Due to its luminous efficiency, these lights have been increasingly adopted by automobile manufacturers and have started to gradually replace traditional lights on streets, as well as indoor and outdoor lighting.
“Influx of LEDs from countries such as China and Taiwan has impeded the growth of Indian LED manufacturers. We believe that setting up of LEDMA will address this issue and help domestic manufacturers of LEDs to be more competitive,” comments Ketan Patel, proprietor of Riddhi LED Lighting, a mid-sized manufacturer of LED lights in Ahmedabad. Mr Patel also added that with the concept of ‘green’ energy catching up thick and fast, LED lighting is sure to be preferred over conventional lights in the near future.
Ramana Rao, chairman and managing director of MIC Electronics Ltd, a leading manufacturer of LED video displays headquartered in Hyderabad, has been appointed as the president of LEDMA. “One of the major aims of LEDMA is to manufacture superior quality and reliable LED products in India, thereby placing the country on the global map of the LED industry. LEDMA will monitor the working of the domestic LED industry and ensure that the products manufactured are at par with international standards,” said Mr Rao.
The association also plans to attract government’s attention towards providing subsidy to the manufacturers of LED lighting products.
