American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC), a renowned power technologies firm, announced plans to expand its strategic collaboration with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Co Ltd. According to the renewed norms of the alliance, a 5MW full conversion wind turbine will be developed by HHI and AMSC Windtec, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMSC. The wind turbine development project will begin by the end of 2011 and the company will deploy the manufactured units in offshore wind power generation units. After the commencement of bulk production of the wind turbines by HHI, the power electronics components will be bought from AMSC. In 2008, AMSC Windtec licensed its 1.65 MW and 2 MW doubly-fed induction wind turbines to HHI. HHI has commenced bulk production of the 1.65MW model. The company has ordered around 80 units of electrical control systems and power electronic components from AMSC for the product range and plans to commence the commissioning of its first-phase 2 MW wind turbines by June 12, 2010. Bulk production of 2 MW wind turbines will begin by the end of 2010. The terms of the renewed agreement enable HHI to enter the global markets as a manufacturer and seller of the 5 MW wind turbine. |
