Samsung Electronics to Expand its Semiconductor Facility in Austin, Texas

Samsung Electronics has planned to expand its semiconductor facility in Austin, Texas. The company will reportedly invest a sum of $3.6 billion in the manufacturing facility which is its only unit located outside South Korea. The project will accomplish the company’s second phase of building a 2.3-million-square-foot semiconductor facility along with constructing a new R&D facility and creating 500 new jobs. Backed by rebounding economy and growing demand for semiconductor chips, the company has decided to spend $15.6 billion on setting up new facilities and acquiring new equipment.

The facility, which currently manufactures NAND flash memory chips for music players and digital cameras, will focus on the production of logic devices after its expansion. The project will make the company the largest manufacturer of technology products in terms of revenue, outdoing Intel Corp, which is currently at the top.

With the latest expansion project, Samsung will have investments of over $9 billion in the facility, which was constructed in 1996. Moreover, the project will boost Samsung’s annual payroll of around $105 million, and the current manpower will increase to 1500 by 2011.
