GE to supply wind turbines for Oregon wind farm

GE has been awarded with a $1.4- billion contract, under which it will supply wind turbines and other services to a wind farm planned in Oregon. According to the reports, this will be the biggest wind farm so far, and will generate around one-tenth of the power required by the Southern California Edison Corporation, provide electricity and energy efficiency rebates and incentives for lighting. Within the contract norms, GE will supply around 338 units of 2.5 MW turbines to Caithness Energy LLC, (privately held Independent Power Producers specialising in the development, acquisition, operation and management of renewable geothermal, wind and solar energy power projects, as well as environmentally friendly, fossil-fueled projects) to be installed from 2011-12. These will be supplied under a 10-year service contract and around 400 people will be employed during the wind farm construction.

According to the latest information, the project, beginning in 2010, will involve around 85 miles of road and 90 miles of electric lines that will be connected to the grid. The target of the project is to supply electricity to the US West Coast grid, which will include Southern California Edison and Les Gelber. Moreover, the wind farm will generate around 2 billion KWH of electricity per year, which will provide sufficiently for the power demands of California.
