Venture capital firms show interest in robotics

Venture capital firms in India are moving their investment interests towards emerging technological fields such as robotics. In line with this trend, Precision Automation and Robotics India, a robotics firm based in Pune, has recently received Rs 41.4 crore as investment from Axis Holding’s India Strategic Opportunities Fund. Alongside Axis Holding, IDG Ventures India Advisors is also planning to enter the robotics business. According to Manik Arora, MD, IDG Ventures, the company is interested in investing in the robotics domain. However, looking at the limited applications of robotics in India, it has decided to invest in companies which have already bagged a few projects.

Looking at such opportunities to move forward in the robotics industry, ThinkLabs, a unit of TRI Technosolutions, has planned to raise $3-4 million through investments in the forthcoming months. The robotics education firm had raised $1 million in the form of investments by Seedfund in January, 2008. Indian robotics firms will have to improve their competence to cash on such investment opportunities.
