Motorola plans to upgrade R&D unit in India for wireless broadband

Motorola has recently shared its plans to make huge investments in expanding its capabilities in India. With the date of auctioning off the WiMAX spectrum in India coming closer, the company has planned to upgrade its research capabilities in India and establish a global hub for wireless broadband technology. Currently, Motorola has maintained a team of around 500 engineers at its R&D facilities in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The company is also investing around $30-40 million annually to develop and deploy fourthgeneration (4G) technologies such as WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE). The company has taken the decision to expand its R&D capabilities to tap the business opportunities apparent in the Indian wireless broadband market. With the auction for WiMAX spectrum, a huge business scope has emerged for WiMAX in India.

Talks have already been opened with four Indian companies concerning the deployment of Motorola’s WiMAX network and business models in Indian markets. Along with its R&D expansion plans, the company is also looking to enter the manufacturing of network equipment for WiMAX and LTE in India.
