The central government launched a ‘Lean Manufacturing Scheme’ for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to enhance the manufacturing competitiveness of the MSME sector. It aims at enhancing the manufacturing competitiveness of MSMEs by applying lean techniques to identify and eliminate waste in the manufacturing process. It will be initially implemented in 100 MSME clusters on a pilot basis in the next 12 months. The government has made a provision of Rs 31 crore for the project. This amount will later be enhanced to cover more such clusters. The scheme will enable companies to become more competitive in the local and international markets. With the help of lean techniques, MSMEs can reduce their production costs and increase efficiency. The clusters (each a group of about 10 units) will be selected from different parts of the country and will undergo lean interventions for about a year. At the same time consultants will be deployed to identify cluster-specific needs and suggest specific lean techniques for intervention in the selected clusters. |
