Toshiba JSW to set up turbine unit in Chennai

Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator (Toshiba JSW), a joint venture between JSW Group and Japanbased electronic goods major Toshiba Corporation, is setting up a facility in Chennai to manufacture steam turbines and generators for thermal power plants.

Toshiba JSW has just signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu Government to facilitate the process of setting up a production unit. As per the MoU, Toshiba JSW can lease land for the construction of manufacturing facilities on a site in Chennai. Toshiba holds 75 percent ownership rights in the company, and the remaining 25 percent is held by JSW Group (JSW Steel: 5 percent; and JSW Energy: 20 percent).

The facility will be used to manufacture mid- to large-sized steam turbines and generators, ranging from 500 MW to 1,000 MW, for super-critical thermal power plants in India. The unit will be located around 18 km north of downtown Chennai. It will have a manufacturing space of around 4,00,000 sq m. The company also plans to invest around $160 million in the plant and manufacturing equipment over five years from 2009 onwards.
