The Automotive Mission Plan launched by the Government of India in 2007 aims to make India a global hub for automobile manufacturing by 2016
December 17, 2009, New Delhi: The Government of India (GoI) is gearing up to make India a global hub for automobile manufacturing. Towards this end, GoI said that the auto sector will generate revenues worth US$145 billion and provide additional employment to 25 million people by 2016. The GoI made this statement in accordance with the Automotive Mission Plan (AMP) 2006-16, which was launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in January, 2007 with the vision to make India a global destination for design and manufacture of automobiles and auto components.
Since then, GoI has taken several steps for the automobile sector to grow towards attaining global standards. Today all the major global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are set up in India. Automobile safety and emission regulations are being continuously upgraded to match the international standards. The next higher emission level norms - Bharat Stage IV- for 13 major Indian cities and Bharat Stage III for rest of the country is planned to be rolled out with effect from April 1, 2010. The automobile infrastructure for testing, homologation and R&D is being augmented to global standards. Indian automobiles are attaining world class standards thereby finding acceptability in the world market. Therefore, the export of Indian automobiles, especially cars has been growing steadily. As reported by industry, India today is the largest tractor manufacturer, second largest two-wheeler manufacturer, fifth largest commercial vehicle manufacturer and 11th largest car manufacturer in the world.
This was stated by Shri Arun Yadav, minister of state for heavy industries and public enterprises in the Lok Sabha today.
